"Octagon" by Christine Brooks

Hi, I’m Marie Prins.

In 1987, my husband and I purchased a dilapidated, historic (1853), octagonal house on the edge of a small town in eastern Ontario. For the past thirty years we have renovated our home, planted perennial and vegetable gardens, and dug a pond on our acre and a half. Here we have raised our family. And kept a small flock of chickens. During these years, I have written memoir, poetry, and children’s stories often inspired by nature, gardening, and the lives lived here for the past century and a half.

Currently my Reading Room resides in the Creamery inside our house. That is the room in which the cream was separated from the milk by those who once farmed our land. Instead of rows of milk cans, there are shelves of books and remedial reading materials for the students I tutor in my home. Please click on the Reading Room link for more information about my programs for students who need support to become better readers.

Announcement – My debut picture book Who’s Walking Dawg? will be released by Red Deer Press in the Spring of 2024. It is a warm-hearted, humorous story of Dawg whose super busy family forgets to walk him. And so he sets off on his own around the neighbourhood. Eventually his family realizes he’s missing and scatters, like a panic of rabbits, to find him.

Announcement – My mid-grade children’s novel The Girl From the Attic is a multi-award winner:
The Uncommon Quest 2019 Silver Winner at Common Deer Press.

– Finalist in the SCBWI Crystal Kite Awards Canada, 2020
